The Metropolitan Orchestra presents

The Metropolitan Orchestra Back On Stage

1 May 2021

Past Event

More than a year after their triumphant first performance at Seymour Centre in March 2020, The Metropolitan Orchestra returns on May 1st with an exciting program showcasing the incredible depth of local talent residing in Sydney.

Featuring leading bassist Kirsty McCahon, an outstanding work from Australian composer Heather Shannon, and led by TMO’s Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams, this live performance will not only pay homage to incredible women in music everywhere, but reflect on the resilience of all Australian artists as they rise from the challenges faced during a year of COVID.

Mozart’s much loved Don Giovanni Overture sets an appropriately emotive theme for this evening of impassioned music before TMO welcome the evening’s vibrant soloist, Kirsty McCahon (ex-principal, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra), to the stage where she will demonstrate the virtuosity of the double bass in Koussevitzky’s wonderful Double Bass Concerto.

Following the break, the audience will once again catch their breath with Shannon’s Sequence and Variation which was commissioned and premiered by TMO in 2017. The orchestra will then deliver an arousing and energetic pinnacle to an incredible concert event with Beethoven’s joyful Seventh Symphony which will leave musicians and audience members truly elated.

*The performance will also include a pre-concert talk starting at 6:15pm sharp and delivered by Australian composer, music educator and conductor, Dr Jim Coyle. Doors for the pre-concert talk will open at 6pm. Doors for general performance admission will open at 6:30pm.

Supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW and the Inner West Council.
