Seymour and Little Goat Arts & Entertainment present
Statues
Australian premiere
"Hamlet starts off lost and shaky. Then coz he's vulnerable, he's radicalised by his father's ghost!"
Days after his father Mustafa's death, Yusuf discovers a dusty old mixtape that changes everything he knew about a man who barely spoke.
The recordings reveal that his father spent the 90s rapping about pretty girls and London life, plotting dreams of superstardom with his best friend Omar. How did this passionate wordsmith become a silent statue?
Yusuf's mourning is overtaken by a journey into the past. Threaded together by Omar's thumping beats and his father's bars, he uncovers secrets that turn his world upside down.
Meanwhile, in the classroom where he teaches English, his brightest student has a take on Shakespeare that sets alarm bells ringing. How Yusuf responds will test where his loyalties lie.
A witty, honest and deeply moving work from award-winning playwright Azan Ahmed, Statues explores the impact of loss, and what you can gain from it.
