Made to Measure

By Alana Valentine

17 May - 1 Jun 2019

Made to Measure is the stunning new work by multi-award winning playwright Alana Valentine that celebrates love and life in all its shapes.

Made to Measure is a new play by acclaimed Australian playwright Alana Valentine giving voice to the body positive community whilst exploring the science behind the effect of weight on our health. This play challenges deeply held prejudices around body image in both the fashion and wider community.

Bride-to-be Ashleigh commissions Monica, a couture designer, to make the wedding dress of her dreams. She is reassured by Monica’s promises that the process will celebrate Ashleigh and fill her with confidence. But Ashleigh’s outward assurance masks internal conflict and shame, and as the wedding gets closer, both client and stylist are forced to face the complicated relationship they have with each other, body shape and social prejudice.

Drawing on interviews with actual designers, brides and health-based scientists, this play shimmers with Alana Valentine’s hallmark humour, humanity and astonishing insights.

Made to Measure will work as a springboard for discussions around body image, self-esteem and discrimination. Drama students will be able to see Alana Valentine’s signature style of verbatim-based theatre live on stage while English students will enjoy a contemporary Australian text with topical and challenging social perspectives.

This production contains occasional coarse language and mild sexual references.
