Asylum Seekers Centre presents

Speaking Asylum: 30 Years of Stories

23 Nov 2023

Past Event

The event will commence at 6.30pm sharp. We encourage guests to arrive by 6.15pm. Food can be pre-ordered from the Agape food truck in the Courtyard to be collected when the show concludes.

Throughout 30 years of the Asylum Seekers Centre, we have heard a lot of stories. Unforgettable stories that make us cry, stories that reveal and those that inspire.

Join us for an evening of incredible stories including:

  • Wendy Sharpe & Mostafa ‘Moz’ Azimitabar in conversation with AGNSW's Anne Ryan about the ability for art to carry a message of love and hope, even while addressing hard topics.
  • Craig Foster in conversation with Ann Odong about the role of sport in defending human rights and creating opportunities.
  • Oliver Twist, Rwandan-born comedian, performer and writer, shares stories of diaspora life.
  • Michael Mohammed Ahmad, founder of the Sweatshop Literacy Movement, introducing new writing by people with refugee experience. New writer Thouraya will read from her work.
  • Parissa Tosif, one half of musical duo Vallis Alps, shares a special music performance. As children of immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers, Vallis Alps have their own passions and stories to share.
  • MC and Asylum Seekers Centre board member Abang Anade Othow will guide us through the evening.
  • Hear from ASC CEO Frances Rush about the ASC’s vision for the future.

After the event, we will gather as a community under the twinkling lights of the Seymour Centre courtyard and celebrate 30 years of storytelling, community and welcome.

Join us for this special evening proudly supported by the Seymour Centre and Gilbert + Tobin.
