Inspiring British playwright Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing returns to Sydney for its 20th anniversary as a feature of the 2013 Mardi Gras Festival. This exciting new production, directed by Brandon Martignago, tells audiences the story of an urban fairy-tale of two young men who find each other on a London Housing Estate.
Written in response to the age of consent laws Britain imposed on the gay community in the ‘90s, Beautiful Thing is sure to resonate with all generations with its raunch, humour and passion.
Beautiful Thing follows the story of how Jamie’s friendship with classmate and neighbor Ste brings lets them explore their real desires after the pair share a single bed for a few nights, discovering comedy, warmth and the music of Mama Cass along the way. Sharing their growth with their loud-mouthed neighbor Leah, Jamie’s politically incorrect mum and her partner, the boys tackle their personal demons head on.
This queer theatre classic that is an exquisite depiction of what it means to be sixteen, in the first flush of love and full of optimism, Beautiful Thing has delighted audiences the world over.
Beautiful Thing is also part of the 2013 Reginald Season.
